Toni Collette Biography

After appearing in a few small Australian films, Toni Collette dazzled audiences with a star-making performance in the ABBA-fueled comedy Muriel's Wedding (1994). But rather than "Go Hollywood" like fellow Aussie actresses like Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts, Toni has stuck to quirky smaller films, like Clockwatchers (1997) and Velvet Goldmine (1998) where she is virtually unrecognizable from one role to the next. She's also one of the hardest working actresses around, sometimes starring in four to five movies a year.


1. To play the chunky title character in Muriel's Wedding, she gained 40 pounds in 7 weeks.
2. Sings in the band the Finish. Her husband is the drummer and they have an album out called Beautiful Awkward Pictures.
3. Her favorite color is bright orange.
4. Her first on-screen appearance was in the film Spotswood alongside Russell Crowe, who took the young actress under his wing.
5. When she was 11, she pretended to have appendicitis and went through surgery just so she could skip a couple days of school.
