You could say Sharon Stone "discovered" Hollywood's bad boy, holding up production on her western The Quick and the Dead until he was free to star in it. L.A. Confidential (1997), his third American film, was his real breakthrough. By 2000, he was a bona fide star, with three Oscar noms and one win for Gladiator (2000) in three years. He has, however, earned a reputation for being difficult, and getting arrested for his boozing, brawling and bad behavior hasn't helped.


1. He took a friend's advice and left then-girlfriend Danielle Spencer in Australia to start his career. He married her eight years later.
2. He was the subject of a kidnapping threat.
3. He's worked as a waiter, a car detailer, a DJ, an insurance salesman, a telephone solicitor, a fruit picker, a horse wrangler and a bingo caller on a resort island.
4. He spent months learning the violin for Master and Commander.
5. Crowe formerly headed up the band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts and now has a group called The Ordinary Fear of God.
