1-MINUTE RESUME FOR MATTHEW BRODERICK
His long-time relationship with Neil Simon and his roles in period movies and plays have lent an old-fashioned appeal to the perennially boyish Matthew Broderick. The son of late actor James Broderick and director/playwright Patricia, Broderick was practically born onstage, growing up on movie sets and studying acting in private school. His prolific background includes nearly 40 films, his most successful perhaps in the '80s (
War Games,
Ferris Bueller's Day Off), but he's happiest on Broadway in such plays as
The Producers (reprising his role on film in 2005). In past years, Broderick dated many of his co-stars including Helen Hunt, Jennifer Grey, Penelope Ann Miller and Lili Taylor. He has been married to actress Sarah Jessica Parker since 1997.
5 Things:
1. In 1985, he and then fiancée Jennifer Grey were involved in a head-on car crash in Ireland that killed a woman and her daughter. He plead guilty to one charge of careless driving and was fined $175.
2. He has lived most of his life in Greenwich Village.
3. His dentist once sent him a stripper for his birthday.
4. He's Jewish.
5. He's admitted to smoking pot in high school.
Quote:
"It's great to believe in yourself, but the downside is that you can, particularly in Hollywood, believe in your dreams so much that you end up lonely in a single occupancy hotel on Hollywood Boulevard."
