Judi Dench Biography

Dame Judi Dench has developed a reputation as arguably the greatest actress in post-World War II history. While she adores the stage, Dench has offered superb performances in film. In 1985, she appeared in A Room With a View with long-time friend, Maggie Smith. When Dench isn't reprising her humble role as M in the modern James Bond series, she offers Oscar-worthy performances in Mrs. Brown, Iris, Chocolat, Notes on a Scandal and a Best Supporting Actress win for Shakespeare in Love in 1999.


1. Her 1999 Oscar was awarded for an 8-minute performance in Shakespeare in Love.
2. She created the role of Sally Bowles in the London premiere of the musical, Cabaret.
3. Her only regret is that she didn't have more children.
4. When asked to play Cleopatra on stage, she refused, saying her version would be a "menopausal dwarf." She later accepted and received rave reviews.
5. Her first stage appearance was as a snail in a play at her Quaker junior school.
