Johnny Depp Biography

Johnny Depp, the dreamy 21 Jump Street alum and late-'80s pinup, managed to surpass hunkdom and attain artistic credibility. Depp built his reputation by brilliantly portraying such outré souls as the lonesome, freakish protagonist of Edward Scissorhands and maverick, cross-dressing director Ed Wood. He delivered particularly excellent performances in 1993's What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and Jim Jarmusch's 1995 stream-of-consciousness western Dead Man. In 1998, Depp stepped out in the Terry Gilliam–directed adaptation of Depp pal Hunter S. Thompson's drug-inspired pseudo-memoir Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the following year brought starring roles in writer-director Rand Ravich's sci-fi/horror flick The Astronaut's Wife and in Sleepy Hollow. Depp locked in his status as both an A-lister and an eccentric, skilled actor with his 2003 portrayal of Capt. Jack Sparrow in Disney's The Pirates of the Caribbean. The comedic role earned him an Oscar nomination and paved the way for other bizarre but commercially successful roles, such as Willie Wonka in Tim Burton's 2005 film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
