John Cusack Biography

Never named an official member of the Brat Pack, Cusack hovered at the perimeter of that famous '80s gang, starring alongside Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy in Class (1983) and with Anthony Michael Hall in Sixteen Candles (1984). He broke free and starred in camp hits The Sure Thing (1985) and Better Off Dead… (1985). Then he became an icon. Hopeless romantics everywhere idealized Cusack's famous romeo Lloyd Dobler in 1989's Say Anything. It took a few years for him to break free from that mold, but plying a hit man in the black comedy Grosse Pointe Blank helped. It also re-booted his career after a near seven-year absence. He cashed in with 1997's vapid moneymaker Con Air and honed his craft alongside Kevin Spacey in Clint Eastwood's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997). But it wasn't until the oddball indie Being John Malkovich (1999) that awards interest sparked. In 2000, Cusack created yet another icon: The fast-talking, music-obsessed commitment phobe in High Fidelity.


1. He joined Chicago's Piven Theatre Workshop while he was still in elementary school.
2. Cusack has been romantically linked with actresses Minnie Driver, Alison Eastwood, Claire Forlani, Lili Taylor and Neve Campbell.
3. He turned down Woody Harrelson's role in Indecent Proposal in 1993.
4. He founded the Chicago-based theater group The New Criminals in 1988 to promote political and avant-garde stage work.
5. The pop/rock group Fall Out Boy wrote "Honorable Mention" in Cusack's honor.
