Javier Bardem Biography

After starring in over two dozen films in his native Spain — including his first international hit, Jamón, Jamón, which co-starred Penélope Cruz, he landed his breakthrough role in Julian Schnabel's Before Night Falls (2000). This garnered his first Oscar nomination; his second would arrive seven years later, following a Golden Globe win, for his haunting supporting role in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men (2007). Bardem has also worked with John Malkovich — his directorial debut in The Dancer Upstairs (2002), and Michael Mann in 2004's Collateral. In 2005, he won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his role in The Sea Inside.

On the pros and cons of skipping the Oscar ceremony if the writers are still on strike: "I won the Golden Globe, and it feels strange to be on the sofa watching the TV while they're saying your name. But at the same time, you have to wear a tuxedo and walk the carpet, so everything in life is good and bad. Who likes the carpet? It's an exciting moment, but again it's the carpet that you have to do it for an hour answering the same questions, so it's kind of weird."
