1-MINUTE RESUME FOR JASON BATEMAN
Jason Bateman became a teen idol in the mid-1980s as Ricky Schroeder's best friend on the comedy
Silver Spoons and Valerie Harper's son on
The Hogan Family, but he had little or no career for nearly 10 years after the series ended their successful runs (at 18 he did direct three episodes of the latter, making him the youngest actor ever to direct). He made a tremendous comeback in 2003 as the star of Fox's edgy, character-driven comedy
Arrested Development, in which he played the long-suffering son in a dysfunctional family, a role that won him a best comedy actor Golden Globe.
5 Things:
1. His older sister is actress Justine Bateman, best-known for her role as bratty Mallory on another 1980s sitcom, Family Ties.
2. Bateman tried his hand at no fewer than four comedies in the early '90s, all of which failed.
3. He auditioned for the role of Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties, but lost out to Michael J. Fox.
4. He underwent throat surgery to remove a benign tumor, causing Arrested to go into hiatus.
5. He was kicked out of several Los Angelesarea high schools.
Quote:
"People have often asked if I'm gay because I don't go out of my way to spit and scratch and give people attitude. People think, 'He's so nice. He's gotta be gay.'
I see plenty of macho heterosexual idiots, but nine times out of 10 you can have a great conversation if you find a gay guy."
