Jackie Chan Biography

Martial arts master Chan spent his early years apart from his parents living at the China Drama Academy, learning singing, acting and dancing as well as martial arts and training in stage performance. He worked as an in-demand stuntman in Hong Kong cinema for years, developing his niche — incorporating humor into his action films. Drunken Master became one of his early H.K. hits, but despite many efforts, it wasn't until 1995's Rumble in the Bronx that he achieved success in the States. Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon followed in 1998 and 2000, respectively, and after years of effort, Chan became an international star.


1. Growing up, his parents worked as a housekeeper and cook in the French Embassy.
2. His birth name literally means "born in Hong Kong."
3. He was never taught how to read or write in the China Drama Academy.
4. He got the name "Jackie" because a co-worker on a construction site in Australia couldn't pronounce his birth name and called him "little Jack" instead.
5. Charities he is involved in include UNICEF, Angels With Wings and Operation Smile; he was voted one of Forbes magazine's top 10 generous celebrities in 2006.
