Drew Barrymore Biography

The progeny of a legendary show-business family (her grandfather was John Barrymore, her great-aunt was Ethel Barrymore, Steven Spielberg is her godfather), Drew started acting as a baby and gained Hollywood's attention as cute sis Gertie in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. But stardom at such an early age had ugly consequences. By 14 she had attempted suicide once and was recovering from alcohol and cocaine abuse. The early and mid-'90s marked her comeback, with sexually charged roles in Poison Ivy and Batman Forever. Despite some wild behavior (flashing David Letterman; blink-and-you'll-miss-them engagements and marriages to guys like Tom Green; reported on- and off-set tantrums), Barrymore has managed to stay on top of Hollywood's A-list, with roles opposite Adam Sandler and in the Charlie's Angels flicks and her own production company.
