America has watched her grow from an awkward teenager on TV in My So-Called Life to an accomplished actress in movies like William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996), which paired her with then-superhot Leonardo DiCaprio. Many of her films are ambitiously anti-mainstream (Polish Wedding, Igby Goes Down, Stardust), and although many of them have not done well at the box office, several have developed cult status, and Danes is consistently recognized as a wise-beyond-her-years talent to watch.


1. She was banned from the Philippines in Sept. 1998 for making derogatory remarks about the country. The President of the Philippines condemned her publicly.
2. She attended the Professional Performing Arts High School, whose alumni include Britney Spears.
