You'd think the definition of "cult actor" wouldn't include a worldwide following and critical success, but that's the dichotomy of Christian Bale, one of those rare actors who have become an enormous success despite years of flying under the radar. At 13, he was picked out of 4,000 child actors to star in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun (1987); since, he has made very few mainstream movies, preferring instead fare like Bret Easton Ellis' pitch-black American Psycho (which put him on the map) and the eerie, Memento-like The Machinist — even his turn as Bruce Wayne in 2005's Batman Returns, while bringing him even more to the world's attention, stayed true to his dark tendencies.


1. He's the son of an adventurer and a circus actress, he's the grandson of a John Wayne double, and his stepmother is author and activist Gloria Steinem.
2. Bale dropped 60 pounds (one-third of his body weight), ending up at 120, to play disturbed insomniac Trevor Reznik in The Machinist.
3. An animal lover, he has two dogs (Mojo and Ramone) and three cats (Miriam, Molly and Lilly), all strays that he found; is an excellent horseman; does not eat red meat; and is active with animal-rights organizations.
4. At 6 feet, 2 inches, he's the first actor since Adam West to stand as tall as the Batman of the comics.
5. He uses a different accent or vocal inflection for every role he takes.
