1-MINUTE RESUME FOR ABBIE CORNISH
Cornish's first acting job was playing a quadriplegic in two scenes of a TV series (she was 15 years old). At age 16, she relocated from the 170-acre family farm to Newcastle and quickly landed a role on an Australian police drama that ran two years. A few more TV movies and series would follow, until she finally made a name for herself internationally playing a confused teen on the road to self-discovery in 2004's
Somersault, which won her several awards, including the Australian Film Institute's Best Actress honor. In 2006, she co-starred with Russell Crowe (who actually sought her out for the part) in Ridley Scott's
A Good Year. In the indie film
Candy, she starred as a heroin addict opposite Heath Ledger. Also that year, she completed filming
The Golden Age, with Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush. Amidst all of her career advancements, there was a rumor that her relationship with Ryan Phillippe (her co-star in an upcoming Kimberly Peirce project) was the biggest reason why Phillippe split with his wife, Reese Witherspoon.
5 Things:
1. A self-proclaimed tomboy, at age 12, she learned to drive and shoot a rifle.
2. She posed occasionally for her amateur-photographer mother and later modeled locally in Australia.
3. A strong animal-rights activist, she has been vegetarian since age 13.
4. She plays guitar and piano, and she loves hip-hop music and has actually rapped onstage.
5. She's "nomadic" and doesn't have a home base but shuttles between Newcastle, Hunter Valley and Melbourne in Australia, when she's not traveling to Europe and America.
Quote:
On her nude scene in
Candy: ""I've met people who don't come out of the shower naked, but I run around everywhere naked; I love it, I think it's great."
